Veterinary Assistant position summary Veterinary assistants will assume all kennel duties and will also assist in restraint of patients for a wide variety of procedures, surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring. They will be responsible for opening and closing of the clinic, weekend feeding and cleaning duty, and housekeeping checklist duties. Veterinary assistants will administer medication to boarding patients and record all information in the patient record. They will also have the opportunity to expand their skills in the areas of the lab by helping set up tests including, but not limited to, fecals and ear smears. Upon demonstration of adequate skills and professionalism, they may be trained to assist with doing TPRs and taking history in the exam room. They will attend to patient nursing and comfort needs and are expected to report any apparent change in a patients condition. They will assist in monitoring recovering patients and monitoring IV fluid administration. Upon receiving certification as a Veterinary Medication Clerk, they are responsible for filling prescriptions. The veterinary assistant is the team member who is designated the primary helper to veterinarians and technicians. It is also expected for the veterinary assistants to learn the basic reception duties of admitting and charging out patients, making appointments, typing prescriptions, and answering the phone. Other duties may be assigned as needed. A Veterinary Assistant supports and assists the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, ensuring the safty of pets and clients, and the continuity of quality care. They work to keep pets safe and comfortable during their visit. Education: High School Diploma or GED required
